Juan José Sánchez Castillo
My name is Juan José, but everyone calls me Xenxo . I was born in Ibi, a town with an entrepreneurial spirit like few others in Spain. It's a place full of factories and people who have created and sold their own products all over the world. It's something you unconsciously observe and absorb from a young age. I don't know if that's why I caught the "bug," as many say, of seeing no limits and creating products never before seen .
When I reached my teens, I decided to study Mechanical Manufacturing , and that opened my mind even more, if that was possible. There were no more limits: anything that crossed my mind , I knew whether it could be manufactured or not.
After working since I was 17 in various companies focused on product design and manufacturing, I decided, at 25, to go back to school, pursuing nothing less than a degree in Mechanical Engineering . For better or worse, it went terribly wrong. It was my first personal failure; I couldn't juggle my studies and work to complete the degree, and I ended up dropping out. However, I didn't give up by any means. After that small setback , I completed a master's degree in product and mold design .
Now I was right: besides knowing how to manufacture anything, I knew the entire process, encompassing materials, manufacturing processes, and mass production. And it didn't stop there; my Master's thesis was the design of the magnesium dispenser , or as we call it, the ROD. In this way, I combined my two great passions: CrossFit and product design , merging them and creating synergy.
Once I finished my master's degree, I felt ready to start my own business. Without hesitation, I began two projects : on the one hand, there was IBIDEA , where I designed and manufactured products for companies, and on the other, ROD , which was still in its infancy at the time. I had built a prototype, which I showed to all my friends and tested in the market.
One day, while discussing the project with my friends, one of them ( Carlos Expósito ) got brave and decided to put up the money for mass production. It seemed the project was finally taking shape. After a year of making molds, we reached the first production run, and after refining some concepts, it was launched .
After struggling for three years with my two ventures, another person, Enrique , entered the ROD equation. With his arrival , we professionalized the brand together with a consulting firm. Now we covered both the design and business aspects, forming a perfect team.
The idea behind ROD is to do what I love. I haven't pursued anything else in all this time we've been running the brand. I want to share my passion for design and sport with everyone, reflected in unique products that create synergy with athletes to improve their daily lives, and make our TIME TO HAVE FUN sound louder than ever.
